Magdalen College School (MCS) has officially announced that Alan Bird, the current Head of City of London School, will serve as the institution’s next Master. He is set to take up the mantle in August 2027, concluding the highly regarded eleven-year tenure of Helen Pike. Mr. Bird’s appointment follows a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, with the Board of Governors citing his proven track record of leadership at prestigious institutions such as Brighton College and Tonbridge School as key factors in their unanimous decision.

Mr. Bird, a Cambridge Economics graduate and London School of Economics scholar, has earned a reputation for combining academic rigour with forward-thinking educational initiatives. During his time at the City of London School, he was instrumental in launching the 'City Ready' careers programme and expanding the curriculum to include high-demand subjects like robotics and artificial intelligence. Beyond technological integration, he has demonstrated a keen ability to foster institutional growth, most notably through his work in deepening ties with the City of London School for Girls and overseeing the development of a collaborative Joint Sixth Form Centre.

This transition arrives at a pivotal moment for MCS. As the school navigates its path toward full co-education, including the recent integration of girls into the Junior School, and prepares for the development of its new Science and Partnerships Building, Mr. Bird’s experience in strategic development is viewed as an ideal match.
